Aims of Department

The primary instruction objective of this department is to provide students with an understanding of pharmacological basis of therapeutics so that the students have requisite knowledge of drugs and in future and they are competent enough to meet the challenges of medical needs of patients

INTRODUCTION

Pharmacology is an essential component of the modern undergraduate and postgraduate medical curricula and a number of other courses like nursing, Pharmacy, dentistry, veterinary medicine etc. Fighting diseases with drugs is as old as man. Undergraduate teaching program in basic and clinical pharmacology provides students with scientific base of its application. The curriculum is designed to brace the students with the clinical significance of learning the subject. The subject is delivered through

The students and the teaching faculty is equally assessed by feed-back. The student achieves the capability to appear in international examinations like USMLE, PLAB etc. He is given short essay questions, multiple choice questions, OSPE/OSCE, Basic Pharmacy Practical, Introductory knowledge of experimental Pharmacology Practicals in intact animals and human beings. The practicals include in- Vivo and in-Vitro drugs effects. The students also learn the basic principles of Research Methodology and Biostatistics. At the end of the session he is able to write a good prescription, and can manage drug toxicity. Clinical Pharmacology is focused on clinical relevance of the theoretical knowledge. Students are also given field work to collect information regarding the drugs.

Prof. Dr. Maqsood Ahmad

HOD/Professor

Dr. Maqsood Ahmad started his career as General Duty Medical Officer (Captain) in Pakistan Army after graduation from NISHTAR MEDICAL COLLEGE MULTAN in 1976. He served with troops in hard areas of Balochistan and Sindh for a couple of year and then joined Pharmacology Department; Quaid-e-Azam Medical College Bahawalpur in November in 1978.

In April 1984 he got M. Phil (Pharmacology) degree from Postgraduate Medical Institute. Lahore & was the 6th student of the discipline awarded the qualification from the institute. The area of special interest remained Gastrointestinal Pharmacology. The experience and the qualification required to become professor completed in 1992. In 2003 promoted as Professor Pharmacology; Nishtar Medical College, Multan on regular basis. He has spent a period of 42 years in learning and teaching Pharmacology to undergraduate and postgraduate students of MBBS, M. Phil, BDS, B-Pharmacy and Diplomas of different disciplines. 

He also served as an Honorable Member of Drug Court, BAHAWALPUR. He got a respectful retirement from Punjab government service in December 2011 and joined AKHTAR SAEED MEDICAL AND DENTAL COLLEGE on 1st March 2012 considering it to be the best medical college in private sector. The research work done was of special nature and carried out by few scientists in the world i.e. Eliciting Peristaltic Reflex-In-Vitro and to understand its mechanism by applying various drugs.

At Akhtar Saeed Medical & Dental College, he is heading dynamic honorable team of doctors which includes gems like Prof. Dr. Maryam Rashid, Dr. Fariha Ahmad Khan, Dr. Neelofar Yousaf Warraich, Dr. Mariyam Iftikhar Piracha, Dr. Haseeb Khan, Dr Sadaf Jabbar, Dr. Ayesha Iqbal, Dr. Mahnoor Fatima; who are always whole heartedly busy in imparting international standards of medical education to the students with dedication.

Prof. Dr. Maryam Rashid is working as Professor of Pharmacology and Therapeutics at Akhtar Saeed Medical & Dental College, Lahore. She completed her MBBS from Rawalpindi Medical College (RMC) in the year 2002. Then she perused for her post-graduation in the subject of Pharmacology and Therapeutics & completed her M.Phil. in 2010 from University of Health Sciences (UHS), Lahore with the award of “Best student & High Academic achiever”. She joined this prestigious institute in the year 2011 as Assistant Professor, was promoted as Associate professor in 2016 and in the year 2019, she was promoted as Professor of Pharmacology and is serving Akhtar Saeed Medical & Dental College with full dedication for almost a decade. 

She is a passionate researcher and has dedicated 10 years to innovative teaching and research. She is the first medical graduate to complete her PhD in Pharmacology from UHS. She is also an honorable member of Advanced Studies & Research Board (ASRB), UHS. She is very ambitious and has motivated her colleagues and juniors for research. The areas of research are “alternative drug treatment of typhoid fever” especially MDR strains, “diabetes mellitus”, “personalized medicine” and “Pharmacogenetics”.
