Department of Ophthalmology HOD

The infrastructure of Ophthalmology Department consists of a major eye operation theater (within the main surgical operating complex). It is equipped with a state of the art operating microscope with video camera for recording, research and teaching purpose with the large LCD screen, two way microphone communication system between students and the surgeon for live surgical demonstration and teaching. The out patient clinic is adequately equipped to provide ambulatory care to patients and teaching facilities for the medical students who start attending the hospital from 3rd MBBS year for their eye disease teaching and training.

Prof. M. Saleem Akhtar did his MBBS in 1971 from King Edward Medical College, Lahore ; Diploma in Ophthalmology from London in 1977, and F.R.C.S. from Royal College of Surgeons, Edinbrough 1983. The Royal College of Ophthalmologists, London confered on him its prestigious fellowship in 1989. He returned to Pakistan in 1984, was selected by Punjab Public Service  Commission  as  Assistant  Professor  of  Ophthalmology.  He  served  at  various  teaching  institutions  e.g  Post Graduate Medical Institute Lahore, Allama Iqbal Medical College, Lahore and King Edward Medical College Lahore for the next 22 years. During this long illustrious career he taught under-graduates and Post graduates alike He was a teacher, supervisor and Examiner to MBBS, DOMS, MCPS, MS, FCPS, and FRCS. He is still examiner to all the universities of Pakistan and College of Physicians and Surgeons of Pakistan. He wrote more than ten original research papers. He is co-author of sixteen research papers. His major contribution includes editing a text book on ophthalmology _Basic Ophthalmology. This book was first published in 2002.  This was the first book on the subject written by a Pakistani author. It received an excellent response and was reprinted three times in four years. Its updated second edition was published in January 2008. This book is now a standard textbook for undergraduates in all medical colleges of Pakistan. He has attended various national many international conferences and presented papers and conducted medical workshops. He has been an active  member  of  Ophthamologic  Society  of  Pakistan  since  1974  and  life  member  since  1986.  He  has  held various responsible offices and was President O.S.P Lahore 2005-7. In recognition of his distinguished services to the cause of ophthamology  in  Pakistan,  especially  in  the  area of  training,  education  and  research,  he  was  conferred  the  most prestigious award of the land _OSP Professor Ramzan Ali Syed Presidential Gold Medal 2004. After retirement, he joined Continental Medical College in March 2008 as Head of Ophthalmology. He joined Akhtar Saeed Medical & Dental College on 18.04.2011 as Professor & Head of Department.
